Research and storyboard

Research and storyboard

After thinking about my three ideas, I decided the 'AT-AT Take Down' would be the best option. The sequence requires the least amount of animation out of the three, and technical drawings of all three models are well documented. The setting of 'Hoth' would also be the most achievable due to its mostly white terrain and basic hill shapes. I plan to look into terrain painting solutions or importing heightmaps in 3DS Max to achieve the landscape. However, I am aware that 3DS Max is often used for level creation in game development and likely has a simpler solution than terrain painting.

The look of 'AT-AT Take Down' will be highly influenced by its setting. An arduous, cold visual style is achieved through the harsh terrain. The well-armored yet camouflaged appearance of the vehicles (see colour pallet) compliments this. This does however suggest both sides are adapted to the terrain, allowing for an explosive battle scene.

I have sketched out a draft storyboard. I have included the camera angle and movement for each, as well as a rough length for each shot. Below is a description of the sequence.

1) Through a pair of binoculars, an AT-AT is spotted in the distance
2) R2D2 hurries down a snowy tunnel as snow from the ceiling breaks off and hits him
3) R2D2 repairs an idle snowspeeder but gets electrocuted and knocked back
4) The snowspeeders exit the hangar and begin shooting the AT-AT units
5) The camera follows on top the tow cable as it is shot toward the AT-AT leg
6) The snowspeeder flies around the AT-AT to tie up its legs
7) The AT-AT falls over
8) Blasters shoot the now immobilised AT-AT; the explosion blows toward the camera covering the whole screen
